#1 Last Weekend Recap 

• We finished up our series “The GHOST” this past Sunday, with a powerful experience featuring communion. We talked about how the Spirit “teaches us” and “reminds us” of all things. And so used the opportunity to teach the importance of communion and allowed the Holy Spirit to REMIND us what He did and what we’ve done.
• You can watch the first two weeks of that series HERE and last week’s message should be up shortly.
• Sunday we celebrated the life of our dear friend and fellow partner of theROCK Jeremy Krajeck.
• Jeremy was only 33 years old when he passed away on Thursday October 27. But to say his life has made an impact on many many lives would be an understatement.
• I was blown away by how many people showed up at The Fire Escape, Kingsport. I know Jeremy would have been very humbled to see how many people loved him and were affected by his life.
• I have to admit it was unlike any “funeral” or “memorial celebration” that I’ve ever been apart of, and I would say that’s a good thing! There were close to 20 people that stood up and came forward to share memories and stories of how Jeremy made a difference in their lives. All of them were amazing, but two stories have stuck with me and I don’t think I’ll ever forget…
• Both stories came from kids who hang out at The Fire Escape. One was from Jonathan… Jonathan is autistic and he shared why Jeremy is a REAL MAN. His parents and in particular his dad never was there for Jonathan because of his disabilities. But Jonathan watched as Jeremy was more than a dad to his autistic son Seth. Jonathan said that even though, because of his autism, he can very rarely show his emotions, he said that he literally shed tears for the first time in a long time after listening to Jeremy speak about how much he loved his son and how he met his needs. He said Jeremy showed that type of unconditional love to him as well, and that he had never met anyone like Jeremy. It was a very moving speech.
• Then there was Matty. I did not know the full story behind Matty until after the memorial celebration. But he told of how Jeremy was as upfront and honest about his faith with Jesus Christ than anyone he had ever met. And he retold the story of a recent conversation he had with Jeremy and Jeremy just flat out told him how much he enjoyed being around him, and so much so that he really wanted to see him in the kingdom of Heaven one day! Matty said that is probably “the most loving and best thing anyone has ever said to him.”—– Matty is a self-proclaimed atheist. Wow!
• After all the stories had been told basically Jeremy’s funeral had been preached (by his life). So it was really easy for me to simply stand up and share the gospel is in the simplest way I know how, and give people an opportunity to respond to this same Jesus that had transformed Jeremy’s life. At least 4 people responded and surrendered their life to Jesus Christ. Of those 4, one of those included…….. Jeremy’s wife, Crystal. That’s so freakin awesome!!!

#2 Volunteer/Partner Lunch THIS SUNDAY

• November is going to be a WILD month at theROCK, so to get us all on the same page and all moving parts working together, we’re going to have a special lunch right after church THIS Sunday!
• This lunch may be primarily for our volunteers and partners at theROCK but it’s also open for anyone who is interested in getting involved or wants to know a little more about our vision and where we’re heading over the next few months.

#3 New thursdayROCK Bible Study

• We also were unable to jump start the new bible study last week, so here’s the details again to that… 
• We just finished up our about 6 month study through the New Testament and now we’re excited to jump start a brand new discussion starting THIS THURSDAY…
• Last November we finished up our study of the book RADICAL by David Platt. It truly was a life altering and church transforming study as we got outside of our little shells and learned how to live a life that is Radical and how we can change the world from Kingsport, TN.
• Now we’re taking it to a WHOLE NUTHA LEVEL as we go through the next study by David Platt called Radical Together. We will learn how to “Unleash the People of God for the Purpose of God”
•

• Sunday, November 6: TIME CHANGE!!! Do not forget to turn the clocks back! That means you get an extra hour to sleep! So it’s also NO EXCUSE SUNDAY.

#1 The GHOST

• We’re finishing up our 3 week series called “The GHOST” this Sunday. You know we’ve all heard and seen some of the crazy stories of churches who can sometimes OVER emphasize the Holy Spirit, but I think a far more prevalent problem in the church today is those who UNDER emphasize the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

#3 Women’s Bible Study

• Our new girls Bible Study has been a HUGE success. So glad to see the girls of theROCK growing together and doing life together as they strenghthen each other (as well as have a blast, so I’ve heard)
• If you’re a girl looking for hope, fun, and growth in your walk with God; you’ve got to give it a shot! (Oh and there’s food)

#5 Be the ONE

• Earlier this month I got the opportunity to go to the Catalyst Conference in Atlanta. It was life transforming and allowed me time to get away for God to speak vision into where we’re heading the next few months as a church.  You can watch my beginning thoughts on where we’re going in this video.

• We’re also beginning a brand new series starting November 6 called “Be the ONE”… To say you have to be there, is an understatement!

#6 ROCK the Block

• Last year we put together our first annual ROCK the Block in Kingsport. We took a housing development in the city and surveyed the area to find out what true NEEDS the people had and went back to meet as many of those needs as we could.
• Last year we were able to meet such needs as: Fixing 6 cars, gave away 100′s of clothes, free eye exams, one thanksgiving dinner paid in full, computer repair, fixed a dryer, and more…
• This year we’re doing it a little bit different, but with the same concept. We want to MEET NEEDS in this city! It’s time for the church to be a little more like Jesus and actually GO to the people and meet the true NEEDS around us. We’re serious about getting our hands dirty and our feet wet and actually DOING something about the condition of the people in our region. And we’d love for YOU to help us…
• This year we’re asking YOU if you know if anybody, whether it be relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances whom you know have some true needs that they can not take care of by themselves. It could be small things like yardwork to raking leaves to computer work or house maintenance. It could be clothes for the winter or house preparations for winter. Or tons of things not listed. Let’s just meet these people’s needs, and YOU help us do it.

#7 Come and See

• If you haven’t checked out one of our experiences on Sunday morning, you’ve got to. Trevor Hager is in a league of his own. The preaching is “ok” on Sunday’s but the worship is amazing! Come and see for yourself.
• And anytime you can’t make it to church, whether sick or out of town, be sure you check out our iROCK internet campus. It’s growing like crazy as we have people from all over tuning in and even have someone from Ohio that wants to become a partner of theROCK now that’s cool! Daniel Fisher is doing outstanding leading that ministry. 

• So we had a new venue this week at Robinson Middle School, and I think the overall census was… GET IT! We’re supposed to meet there one more week (July 3) and then we’re back at Johnson Elementary, but man the possibilities inside Robinson are amazing. We shall see what the future holds.
• The volunteer teams this week were AWESOME! Man at 8:45am you could just feel the energy building as our teams turned Robinson Middle School into theROCKchurch. If you’re not on one of these teams… what are you waiting for? Join up!
• Last week in my blog I explained how we had almost tripled in size over the last couple of months, really in a time when most church attendance starts to DROP because of summer. So honestly, I figured the attendance would definitely see a drop this week, considering we were moving locations and it’s right in the middle of June and all that stuff, but the attendance was GREAT!!  I was amazed.
• Adding Trevor Hager to our team has been one of the biggest additions in theROCK’s history. And this Sunday was perhaps my favorite set list we’ve ever done! Check these songs out on YouTube or something. Wish we could get this on a CD. It was that good! But most importantly the Spirit was moving like crazy!

We continued our “Manly Men” series with some COMPETITION! This week it was a contest to see which guy could Hammer in 3 nails the quickest… The winner… Chris Krajeck!

•  So I tried to show a clip from Rocky 2 to open up my sermon on Sunday, but it made the computer crash, so in honor of that I have a special treat. And this also confirms what I said in Week 1 how my son Jackson is a little bit of a Rocky Balboa freak. Well check this out and you make the call…

• So the message was called “The Wolfpack” and we challenged our guys to get involved in community. Get involved in each other’s lives and be sure you’re following the Alpha male in the wolfpack and that of course is Jesus.
• Here’s the message for those of you who missed it… The Wolfpack

• And you know the message really wasn’t even intended to be ultra evangelical in like a hardcore salvation message, but God just took that sucker a completely different direction, and we began to add to the number I gave last week… I said last week we’ve had at LEAST 17 people who have given their lives to Jesus Christ the last 2 months. SEVENTEEN. Well when I gave the challenge at the end of the message on Sunday… And I asked for those who were ready to REPENT and SURRENDER their lives to the cause of Jesus Christ. And there I saw ONE hand go up, then TWO, then THREE!  I saw THREE! And that’s Awesome! That means over 20 people have given their lives to Jesus Christ in the last two months at theROCK! But it wasn’t over…
• We got to baptize right after the experience on Sunday and I was blown away! First of all we baptized 6 followers of Christ! And that never gets old! And we still have plenty more to go. But the bank at Warriors Path was filled with people who traveled from Robinson Middle School to see people get dunked for Jesus that is what it’s all about! Here’s a video to recap the experience via Jason Jackson…

• Over the last two months we have seen 17 people give their lives to Jesus Christ! SEVENTEEN! 
• We are getting ready to baptize THIS SUNDAY as many as 11 people. ELEVEN people saying I AM NOT ASHAMED TO STAND UP FOR CHRIST! That’s awesome!
• Since May we have seen attendance almost triple! Did you catch that? In the summer months, when church attendance always DROPS… We have GROWN! Unreal.
• Our thursdayROCK bible study, has gone from almost primarily at one point nothing but me sitting at the computer with Daniel staring me in the face and about 5 people online watching. To what we saw TONIGHT… Where we had 10 people LIVE IN PERSON… And many others online!  We had 13 viewers ONLINE last week, for a BIBLE STUDY…  That blows my mind!
• We have seen since May amazing stories and amazing videos like these

• Trevor Hager has taken our creative arts to a WHOLE NUTHA LEVEL. And it’s only the beginning
• Daniel Fisher is growing the iROCK internet campus into an amazing thing.
• PJ Johnson has been an amazing soundboard and partner in casting vision and gearing up for the future of theROCK and I can’t say thank you enough.
• We’ve got people that are now on board who are SOLD OUT to the vision, of Paying Whatever Cost to Point People to the Cross… And their enthusiasm is CONTAGIOUS!
• And lastly I am STINKIN PUMPED because God’s finally given me clear direction that it’s time to go back to Nicaragua in January 2012! Sign-ups will be ready this Sunday! This is going to be an AMAZING TEAM!

All I can say is, if you have not had the chance to check out what’s going on at theROCK please I’m telling you, you have GOT to give it a shot! This Manly Men Series is just EXPLODING w/ testosterone, fun, competition, and most importantly MEN LEARNING TO BECOME MEN, and changing families! You can’t miss the last two weeks. You can’t.

As 2011 approaches my mind is already beginning to explore the new challenges, the new aspirations, the new goals, and the renewed vision for the new year. And one of the things I hope to reignite is my presence through the social networks including the regular use of this blog. The challenges of planting a relevant church in “old school” tradition rich east Tennessee has perhaps been even more challenging than I gave the enemy credit for. For the church planters and young leaders out there that were checking out this blog in the past, check back soon for my interesting take on those challenges and more in the coming weeks… But that’s for another time, another post…

As for tonight… I had to share this anecdote/story. I love when God gives me messages to preach and then follows up that week with the real life application. It’s been happening quite a bit lately actually.

We began a series on Sunday called Do You Hear? Focusing all on HEARING from God. You know usually when you hear preachers preach about prayer, it’s always about the “what to say” aspect and rarely do we learn the “what did He say” part. We just finished up in our Sun Stand Still series learning how to pray big prayers and asking God for big things. But you know, it’s great to pray those things, and God wants you to DREAM BIG, and ASK AUDACIOUSLY, but if we fail to LISTEN and hear from God, we’ve blown the whole deal.

So last week it was all about laying the foundation to how we HEAR from God. Because I still contend that the greatest life skill, the greatest ability for any pastor is the skill and the ability to HEAR God’s voice and the COURAGE to DO what He says. And for YOU, although you may be a housewife that’s changing dirty diapers and trying to manage the dishes, laundry, and supper, or you may be working at Wal-Mart listening to grumpy holiday Scrooge’s all day complain about the weather and the lysol going up 2 cents or you’re a student that feels like you’re never going to graduate and “real life” is so far away… Regardless what you do or how insignificant you think your life is at the moment, the greatest skill you can ever develop is the ability to HEAR God’s Voice and the COURAGE to do what He says.

I told you though, if you really want to hear God speak, you’ve got to pay attention! Because the truth is He is speaking every single day! But you’ve got to tune in. You’ve got to have the antenna up, you’ve got to clean your ears out, sit up straight, and have your eyes alert. He’s speaking… are you listening?

Well if I wasn’t listening before… believe me… God’s got my attention tonight. As I said on Sunday your burning bush may come from the most normal, ordinary objects. It was a freakin bush, an ordinary, natural bush, that had no meaning whatsoever, UNTIL God set it on fire. And soon the ordinary became extraordinary. You better pay attention to the regular, natural, ordinary things in your life, because they can become supernatural in a few moments with God’s presence. Teenagers listen to your parents, believe it or not God can speak through them. Yes, even a spouse can have some wisdom from God every now and then. And you know what? Would you believe me if I told you… God can speak LOUD and CLEAR through a 2 year old?

One of the moments I look forward to all day is the moment after I read Jackson his bed time story, and then I pray for Him (tonight before I prayed, I told Jax how awesome he was and how much potential he really had. And then I prayed to God asking Him to ignite the talents that He has given him, and I prayed that Jackson Riner would be the best in the world at that talent. That he would be a leader for his generation to make a difference in the world, using the talent [whatever it may be] as the springboard to changing the world) By the way it’s never too early and never too late to pray those prayers for your kids. Encourage them and empower them to be the best they can be, with the skills and talents God has given them.  Anyway… so after we pray, and turn out the lights, we always just have a moment where we just talk. These are some of my greatest times, just sitting there having a conversation with a 2 year old. It is absolutely hilarious at times, and actually insightful at times. He’ll go on talking about football and Tyler Bray, and Du-fense (defense). He’ll talk about what he did at Mimi’s and what he ate for dinner. I love it!

But tonight it was daddy’s turn to vent to son. Without going into detail, today was very stressful on multiple levels. And there are some MAJOR decisions and some IMMEDIATE needs that MUST be taken care of in the coming weeks to launch theROCKchurch into financial freedom and to take us to the next level. But today has just been a crossroads time and I’ve really been trying to put into practice my message on HEARING God’s voice. I’ve asked God to speak to me all day, and I just wasn’t hearing it… UNTIL…

I said “Jackson, let me just tell you… I’ve got some things that are just weighing heavy on me” “Heavy?” “Yes, son, weighing heavy on me.” He sat in silence as I continued “I just don’t know what to do? I need some advice, and I need to hear from God. Can you give me some advice?”… The next words and I promise you I’m not exaggerating this or adding. But God began to speak through a burning bush/ahem a 2 year old… “Daddy, preach the Bible… pppreach the Truth.” “Umm, that’s pretty good son, what else?”… “Lift the people up. Daddy help people, lift people up. Preach the Bible.”… I sat in silence… Preach the Bible? Lift people up? Help people? “Daddy, the people… the truth… people need truth” hmm, God? Umm, is that you? “Daddy… football” and we’re done. haha…

As I kissed him goodnight and walked out of the room… it hit me. God Still Speaks. God Is Able to Ignite the Ordinary. And God’s Voice Reminds You of His Promises. (3 of the 4 points from Sunday’s message) Are you listening? I’m listening… Don’t think this stuff don’t apply to you. It’s time that you started believing God for the impossible in your life. I’ve heard God’s voice, now I’ve got to have the COURAGE to do what He says.

You know over the course of the last 2 years a question has been raging in my soul that I simply can not shake… HAVE WE MISSED IT? I mean as a society, as a people, as a culture, as a church… have we missed it? Are we off? Do we really understand the cost of being a follower of Jesus Christ?

This question haunted me to the point that I left a church that I cared about to follow God’s prompting on my heart to begin and ignite a new church/movement of God in Kingsport.  In some ways, admittedly, the transition to a “new church” and a “new approach” in Kingsport has been difficult.  And in large part I still believe the reason all comes back to the same question that has been haunting me… HAVE WE MISSED IT? Do we… GET “IT”?

What frightens me is that we live in a culture in upper East Tennessee that is full of “Niiice” people, who on the surface maybe have good intentions and on the surface has good morals and on the surface “love Jesus” but what lies under the surface? Are we nothing more but surface people with depth as shallow as a dried out swimming pool? BREAKING NEWS: Good intentions lead to the same place as bad intentions, Traditions get us no closer to God than secular living, and being nice guarantees nothing more than a brief smile. The bottom line is if we’re basing our “Christianity” on good intentions, church traditions, and a fake smile the end result is terrifying.

You see the church world we see today in America, is so far away from what we read from Jesus that it’s sickening.  And again we throw out the good intentions but we’ve castrated (no other way to say it) the gospel for what it is. We’ve undercut and diluted the sharpness at which Jesus spoke. When Jesus said “Any of you who does not give up everything he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33) Did He really mean that? “No we say…” and then we’ll splat out some ridiculous reason as to why that’s not truly applicable to us today. Or what about when He told the rich young ruler to “go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Did He mean it?… But, but, but that was because he was too rich and…  What are we???…

Two books have captured my heart and two men have put into words what I have felt in my heart for 2 years. The first book was “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan and we did a series at theROCK based off of this book. You can check it out here by clicking on the link and scrolling down till you see the series. And the second book is this book “Radical” by David Platt. I have chosen to use this book as a guide as we dig into the Scriptures through what God has been teaching me. David takes a bold and brash approach at the true meaning of the gospel and what it means for us.

So my next question is this… Will you go with us? I don’t care what church you’re affiliated with. I don’t care from what background you come from. I don’t care if you’re a skeptic or a saint. I dare you to look deeper into your self than you ever have before. I dare you to go below the surface of your spiritual walk. I dare you to take a RADICAL look at Jesus and I promise you… you will never… be… the same.
